The Power of Simple Kindness

Saturday, September 5, 2009
Still on the Big Island of Hawaii, after an excellent seminar with Dr.
George Pratt--"Power of Energy." I am sitting on the beach listening
to David Hawkins' book, "Power Vs. Force," this Saturday afternoon on
Labor Day Weekend, and was struck by the simple and profound truth of the
following excerpt from the audio book, which I highly recommend
buying!

"... What we do to benefit life, automatically benefits all of us because
we are all included in that which is life. We are life. It is a
scientific fact that what is good for you, is good for me. Simple
kindness to oneself and all that lives is the most powerful
transformational force of all. It produces no backlash, has no
downside, and never leads to loss or despair. It increases ones own
true power without exacting any toll...."
Aloha,
Adrianne

The Power of Imagination

Sunday, July 19, 2009
To carve a new neuropathway into your brain, a  new thought pattern that will serve you and your purpose, you’ll want to use your imagination.
Here’s the important point to remember: your brain can't tell the difference between an experience that actually happens and one that is imagined.
So, the brain will be as responsive to a good visualization as it is to something that actually happens. For instance, when athletes visualize a race or a golf round or an event to train for peak performance, their physiological response is measurable and looks just like it does when they are actually performing. The brain sends out the very same signals to the body's systems as it would in the "real life" situation.
Now, when we were kids most of us were pretty good imaginers. We would pretend to be heroes or mommies or world-famous musicians. And when we pretended, we got all of our senses involved: we walked like a pirate and felt brave and fearless. We could smell the briny sea and hear the ocean waves, right? This is the kind of imagining or visualization that your brain will respond to.
So, when carving a new neuropathway into your brain, you’ll want to get all your senses involved and use the power of your imagination to create the reality you want!

How Does Your Brain Work?

Wednesday, July 15, 2009
Are you aware that your brain, not circumstance, controls your outcomes? I know many of you are doing all you can think of to find work, increase income, deal with your finances, etc. But even if you are "doing all the right things," you may not be getting results.

Why?

If you’re focusing on how bad the economy is, how many people have been laid off in your industry, how many other people have lost money…well, that's  exactly what you are going to see. Your brain will not let you see that unusual opportunity or that potential opening in your field.

Some of you are walking around knowing that the sky is going to fall and you'll be lucky to survive at all. Others are seeing this time as an opportunity to change business as usual and create a more positive world.

Here’s the thing:  your brain doesn't care which is right, but it’s directing your emotions, heart rate, breathing – all of your systems – to prepare for a future event (whether it’s filled with positivity and inspiration or doom and gloom) that it believes will happen.

Stay tuned for my next post – “The Internal Authority that Runs Your Life!”

Why Self-Improvement Does NOT Work

Sunday, June 14, 2009
I want to explain to you why all of the effort you have put into self-improvement has very little chance of ever, ever working. You know the programs--you've tried the programs!
  • Get thighs like Cameron Diaz in 30 days!
  • Lower your golf handicap by 10 strokes in two days!
  • Be debt-free and a millionaire within 6 months?
  • 3 easy steps to improve your sex life!
You know what? Many of these programs are valid and could really be effective. Except for one critical point: your brain will reject them. Let me repeat: your brain will reject them.
Similar to the way a body will reject a donor organ that is not compatible, your brain – the most powerful muscle you have – will reject thoughts, ideas, or possibilities that are incompatible or foreign to it. Why? Because your brain is "conditioned." And, that conditioning holds the key to your success or failure.

(What's conditioning? Click here to watch a video clip: "Free the Mohini!")

So... how do we overcome this conditioning? Well, I'll tell you a couple of methods that don't work so well. One is affirmations. Now before you jump all over me, there are ways to make affirmative statements effective. But just plopping a happy, fluffy, shiny thought over a grimy, nasty, negative one does not work. That's like spraying your nasty gym shoes with Eau de Cologne – the stink is still there and the combination is almost worse!

Another method that usually doesn't work in the long run: will power. Will power has a stronger voice, but it still has to argue with the voice of your conditioning which is why it takes so much effort.

So enough about what doesn't work--want to know what does? Aligned focus works. Aligned focus means that your conditioning is aligned with what you want so that any action you take toward that goal becomes effective. You need to re-wire the neuro-pathways of your brain so that it uses its power for you, not against you.

You want to loose weight so you wire your brain with the message: "I'm naturally slim and healthy" not "I've always been fat!"  If you want to break the record in the downhill slalom, your brain needs to be aligned with that goal so it will direct the blood flow to the right muscles, deepen your breathing, let you see opportunities for cutting time, etc, etc. If you want to stop yelling at your kid, your brain needs to be on board to keep your adrenalin from flowing to your vocal chords when you find out she hasn't done her homework.  Does this make sense?

If this makes sense to you -- get "Back In Charge!" and start rewiring your brain so that it starts supporting all you want to do, be, and have in life!

Wishing you focus, fitness, and flexibility in body and mind!

Choice, Not Reaction!

Tuesday, June 9, 2009
An exercise my clients find very helpful (use it myself, too!):

THE OBNOXIOUS QUESTION

Sometimes it's hard to stick to The Facts. Period. Especially in challenging times like these, circumstances seem to justify our reactions, our panic, anxiety, or anger – RIGHT?
The point is not whether your reaction is right or wrong, justified or not. The point is:
Does it really serve you?
Does it get you where you want to go?
Does it help you find solutions or feel good?
Does it really serve you?

I call this question obnoxious because when you're in the throes of a really delicious, impassioned, righteous ranting and raving session, it's very annoying to have someone stop you and ask it! Trust me, I know. Especially when you've got an airtight, provable case and you're certain that any court in the land would agree with you! You've been wronged and have dozens of juicy details to add to the story and your friends all support your position and . . .

BUT WAIT: … Does your response really serve you?
Is it helping you create the life you desire?
Is your worry and panic helping you find solutions to your business situation?
Is your righteous anger helping you figure out a new income stream? Is your frustration getting the work done? Probably not.

One of the most important aspects of freeing ourselves from negative conditioned reactions is making the decision to do so. Because the truth is that we have choice about how we respond to every situation. It doesn't matter whether our response is "justified" or not. The only question to ask is: Does this response truly serve me and my purpose? And once you've honestly answered that question, it is totally up to you whether you choose to hang on to the reaction or release it. Your choice. Always.

Strengthening Your Self Esteem

Tuesday, June 12, 2007
Women have come a long way over the past several decades: more parity in salaries, more options in career, more freedom in lifestyle choices. But how far have we come in our underlying self-esteem?

It’s amazing that so many of us still have areas in which we feel inadequate, maybe even powerless. We can be CEO’s, doctors, US Senators – but we still might cringe at trying (and being initially klutzy at) a new sport, showing our imperfect legs in shorts, or asking for a long-overdue raise. We can negotiate fiercely in the Board room – but put up with lousy haircuts for months before we get up the nerve to “fire” our hairdresser. We sit “small” in our airplane seats, not wanting to take up too much space.

Self-esteem is not the same as assertiveness. Assertiveness is a behavior; self-esteem is the underlying feeling of worthiness, value, even self-love. Many of us in business or sports or other competitive arenas have learned to be assertive – but as a survival mechanism, not necessarily from an underlying sense of healthy self-esteem.

That gap between how we are acting – assertively – and how we are feeling – undeserving or unworthy – causes an internal tension, a feeling of incongruence, and definitely less effectiveness in our performance and in our lives. By trying to “fake it until we make it,” we set ourselves up to never make it at all!

And though our lack of self-esteem as women may be rooted in past signals from our family, underlying messages in our culture, etc, etc, etc – the power to improve our self image is in the present moment. Past conditioning can be corrected by re-conditioning in the present.
How can we do this? The first steps are awareness and acknowledgement. Do you feel like you are “in the way” on the golf course? Do you feel timid telling your doctor that you want a second opinion? Or when you do gird yourself up to confront a situation at the office, does it take an incredible toll on your body and emotions?

Once you’ve identified the areas where your self-esteem is lagging, try this practice:
With eyes closed, sit quietly and bring to mind the situation where you’ve felt unworthy.
Allow yourself to feel into the picture in your mind. How does it feel in your body? Where exactly is the feeling located in your body?

After a few minutes, turn your attention to your breathing, your deep inhales and complete exhales.

As you allow your body to relax into your breathing, imagine yourself in that same situation but as a new, truly self-confidant and empowered you.

Sit with this new picture of yourself for a few minutes, breathing deeply.

While doing this practice, if your new picture is not perfect, don’t despair! You will have already caused a shift in your sense of self simply by acknowledging and breathing through your old discomfort. Play with the technique, and you’ll notice how much more vibrant the self-confidant images of yourself become – and how powerfully this simple practice will impact your life!
